RAILPOOL and NTT expand maintenance capacity at Sweden’s most important transport hub.

Together with its maintenance subsidiary NTT, the RAILPOOL Group is expanding maintenance capacity at Sweden’s most important transport hub in Västra Götaland, utilising Jernhusen’s brand-new infrastructure.

Jernhusen signs a 20-year lease with NTT for a new wheel lathe shop in Gothenburg

NTT joins Jernhusen in taking a critical step in bolstering the railways and train maintenance capacity in Västra Götaland. A 20-year lease has been signed with NTT (NTT Sverige AB) with the goal of establishing the region’s first state of the art lathing facility for trains. Parallel to this endeavour, investments are being made to electrify the Fjällbo depot as a step to facilitate long-term expansion.

Stockholm, 26 August 2026 – Jernhusen has put its signature on a 20-year lease with NTT (NTT Sverige AB). NTT is owned by the rolling stock leasing company RAILPOOL, based in Munich.

“The lease with NTT and the electrification of the Fjällbo area is the first step for comprehensive and long-term developments in Fjällbo and the greater Gothenburg region. Through our investments and initiatives, Jernhusen is opening up this area for modern depot functions in order to meet a rapidly increasing demand for efficient train maintenance.” – Biljana Pehrsson, CEO of Jernhusen.

The lease concerns a new 1,100 square metre lathing facility with wheel lathes, to be operated by NTT. It will also be the first modern facility of its kind in the Västra Götaland region. It will be equipped with an advanced “tandem lathe”, which means that two wheel axles can be processed at the same time. This will cut down the lathing process time by half compared to traditional facilities, allowing rolling stock to return to service faster. The facility will also be equipped for lathing work on brake plates, and a streamlined wave-off feature for engines and passenger trains.

This lease and the aforementioned investments mark an important milestone for the Fjällbo depot. At the same time as the lathing facility is being constructed, the area, which has lacked electrical infrastructure for 15–20 years, will also be electrified. The new infrastructure will allow electric engines and passenger trains to travel directly to the area and its facilities without first having to swap for a diesel engine. This provides a dramatically improved capacity, boosted efficiency, and a smaller environmental impact for train operators, since they no longer need to undertake long non-revenue journeys just to undergo maintenance.

Construction on the new wheel lathe shop is expected to begin in October 2026, with the facility and electrification to be completed sometime in the second quarter of 2028. This will mark the first step of a larger development plan for Fjällbo. Jernhusen intends to continue to develop the Fjällbo depot area to further bolster Gothenburg as a central hub for the sustainable transport of both goods and people of tomorrow.
